A million years in the past, there was an enormous explosion of species improvement on Earth, inflicting the biodiversity of animals to increase dramatically — but the real reason behind that event has remained a mystery. In a brand new paper published in Science Advances, scientists show that the event’s onset coincided with the most massive documented asteroid breakup in the asteroid belt over the past two billion years.
That breakup, which was triggered by a collision with another asteroid or comet, would have unfolded high quantities of dust all through the photovoltaic system. The blocking effect of this dust may have partly stopped sunlight from reaching the Earth, leading to cooler temperatures. The research’s co-creator Birger Schmitz, a professor of nuclear physics at Lund College, writes in The Conversation. The climate is changing from being kind of homogeneous to becoming divided into climate zones – from Arctic circumstances on the poles to tropical situations on the equator. The scientists cite proof in detailed research of sea ground sediments in Sweden and Russia that include “fossil meteorites” or rocks that fell on the Earth in its historic previous and had been preserved similar to animal fossils.
