Reduce Food and Drink Waste
There are a number of steps you can take in relation to your household consumption of food and drink that can save you energy and money and contribute to cutting your carbon footprint.
1. Plan meals
Planning what you are going cook for the family allows you to efficiently use the food you have bought. Planning a week ahead allows you to reduce the amount of food that may go out of date before you get a chance to use it.
2. Portion size
To reduce food waste, perhaps think more carefully about how much food you cook and how much food you put on your plate. Making portion sizes slightly smaller or reducing the amount of food you cook for each meal can reduce food waste that may otherwise be thrown away.
3. Leftovers
If there are any leftovers from your meals, keep them. You can reheat and have them as lunch or dinner the next day or use leftovers in a variety of recipes.
4. Seasonal produce
Fruits and vegetables that are currently in season take much less energy to produce and transport than fruits and vegetables that are not. Try and buy fresh seasonal British vegetables and fruit as often as possible.
5. Make a shopping list
Making a shopping list can not only save you time in terms of wandering round a supermarket wondering what you may have forgotten, but it also allows you to stick to your planned meals, reduce the number of duplicates you may buy and save money as you will not get distracted by special offer products you may not need.
6. Plan your shopping trips
Making shopping lists and planning when you make your trip to the supermarket allow you to cut down the number of trips you may need to make if you have forgotten anything or discover you need something more for a meal you have planned.
7. Reduce the number of shopping trips
You can cut down the number of trips to the supermarket in the car, by taking public transport or getting your shopping delivered.
