15 Reasons To ACT NOW On Climate Change
1. The 10 hottest years since 1850 have all been in the last 12 years. The Earth’s temperature has risen by a shocking 0.75°C in the last 100 years, and the rate of global warming is only increasing.
2. The Arctic ice is melting. The ice caps have shrunk by 10% every 10 years since the 1970s.
3. CO2 levels have increased 38% since 1750 (the year of the industrial revolution).
4. Humans burning fossil fuels, clearing forests and driving cars has caused the level of greenhouse gases to rise.
5. Climate change is caused by humans and threatens our future.
6. If the earth got just 2°C warmer it would be harder to grow food, there would be more competition for water, sea levels would rise and some species of animal could be wiped out.
7. It will cost less to reduce our carbon emissions than to try and cope with climate change.
8. Sea levels have risen by 10cm in the last 50 years because of Arctic ice melting.
9. Some countries are already regularly under threat from floods (Bangladesh).
10. If nothing is done, the sea level could rise another 100cm in a century.
11. Droughts are twice as common as in 1970.
12. Greenhouse gases have had 10 times as much effect on our climate than any changes in the Sun’s output.
13. Heat waves in Europe are twice as likely (in 2003 2,000 people died in the UK heat wave).
14. Approximately 20% of species could be extinct if the Earth’s temperature rose by 2°C.
15. We need to act now, or it could soon be too late
